Designer

Armed with a diploma in brand building communication after completing graduation, Suchismita started her career in McCann Erickson, Kolkata. Art direction and print production were her forte in her formative years at the agency.

Advertising didn’t hold her interest long so she started working for NGOs designing their communication materials. All this while her first love remained textiles. Soon she found her way into a textile export house, purely through her knack of designing sarees and clothes for family and friends. This understanding of the Indian psyche quickly moved her to greater heights of excellence in textile design and merchandising. Soon she was working with designer houses like Armani, DKNY, Kenzo, Dries van Noten, Sonia Rykiel, Etro et al. To understand the fashion and study the market she travelled to Europe regularly. The demand for the best qualities at rock bottom prices made her go to the heartlands of India, where she finally discovered her vision.

It took just 4 years to give shape to this dream, in the form of Nextiles. Not just a brand or a boutique; an organisation dedicated to offer the best quality natural fibres and transform the lives of traditional Indian artisans. Suchismita dreams of a world free of mass produced designs, a fair share to the artisans and predicting the styles of tomorrow.

She was chosen to participate in the Artist in Residence programme arranged by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of the French Embassy in India in 2005, where she researched  Art Nouveau in France and looked into the possibility of using them in textiles.

2006 saw her participate in the Ethical Fashion Show in Paris, France, where her prime focus was on recycling natural fibres/textiles and she exhibited a collection dedicated to Art Nouveau using traditional Indian hand embroidery and block printing.

Presently retailing from Kolkata, Suchismita has taken part in a number of national exhibitions and fashion shows.
